Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao today joined the short list of world leaders who have had shoes thrown at them by angry protesters. You can see the immediate aftermath of the incident in this clip:
'Shame on you!' shout some observers in the crowd.
On the other hand, should we consider ourselves fortunate to live in a free society where such protests - shameful or not - can at least happen without the protesters being shipped off to a labour camp and never seen again?

Always with the shoes! How are these people expecting to get home afterwards? Of course they'll be driven "home" to a cell in an armoured car, but still. No, I think peeled fruits and vegetables make a better statement and have the added benefit that you can eat them after a long hard slog at the lectern.
To quote the article in the Times you link to:
"The guests who heard Mr Jibao speak were searched and passed through metal detractors as they entered the room."
Do these professional journalists refer to the Prime Minister as Mr Gordin then?
Ha ha - are they STILL doing that? I've seen "Mr. Zemin" in a Norwegian paper about Jiang Zemin too.
Would they refer to Mao as "Mr. Zedong" too?
But it's partly the Chinese's own fault. Many of them would write their name like that (Jibao Wen) after moving to a western country.
Also, what is a 'metal detractor'? Standards slipping at the Times.

Yes but not when you're throwing a show that could potentially hurt someone.
